How to Be Sure Heaven is Your Home

Do you know for sure that you are going to be with God in heaven when you die? Maybe, you have realized for the first time the Bible is indeed the written revelation of Almighty God to man - it is our Creator’s message to us. As His creation, He owns us and we are surely accountable to Him for how we live our lives (see Romans 14:12, and Hebrews 9:27 in the Bible). The Bible tells us we all, like Adam, have departed from God’s ways; we have gone our own way, living life as if we were “God,” ourselves. This is what the Bible calls ‘sin,’ and we have all sinned (see Romans 3:23).

The Bible also tells us God will hold us responsible. We all deserve God’s judgment for our sin. As descendants of Adam, we all suffer physical death at the end of life. The Bible calls this death a curse. It came about because of Adam’s sin, when he, by his actions effectively told God that He was not needed - Adam was going to be his own god. To this very day, we all maintain the same attitude, and will suffer death for it.

The Good News is that God has provided a way of escape from the curse of death and the judgment to come through His Son Jesus. “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Jesus Christ came into the world, to take upon Himself the curse and penalty for all our sins. As God in the flesh, Jesus lived a sinless life (Hebrews 4:15) and willingly gave Himself to suffer such a horrible death for us, in our place (Romans 5:8, and 1Peter 3:18). He took upon himself the punishment for our sins, that WE all deserve. His life was all sufficient to pay for the sins of all people, and for all time!

God offers this free gift called Salvation to all who will by faith receive it. He commands us to turn away from our sinful ways and fully trust in what Jesus Christ has done for us. There is nothing we can do to remove our guilt before God. Doing good things can never remove our sins; it is only by the mercy of God that we can be saved through what He has done (Ephesians 2:8,9).

Whoever rejects God’s free offer will suffer His wrath in the judgment to come, which the Bible clearly warns. This is a terrifying prospect (see 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9), as it should be. Jesus spent so much time warning people of their fate. Obviously, God does not want ANYONE to end up in hell. That’s why Jesus came!

So, how can someone be saved?

If God has shown you that you are an sinner, deserving of God’s condemnation for your sin, and so in need of His forgiveness, then the Bible says that when you simply have “repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21), you can ask for the gift of forgiveness, and eternal life! Repentance means a complete surrender of heart and mind regarding sin - that you agree with God about your sin and now want to live a life for Him. Faith in Jesus Christ means accepting who He is, ‘the Son of the living God,’ and that He “died for the ungodly!” (Romans 5:8). Can you believe He wants to save you? Then put your faith in Him alone.

Speak to God in prayer, admitting that you truly are a guilty, helpless sinner, and ask Him to save you and be Lord of your life, helping you to leave behind your sinful ways and to live for Him. The Bible says, “for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord (Jesus), shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
