Why Isn't the Bible Working Today?

Sunday 28 February 2021 Pastor Craig Ledbetter Hebrews 4:2

I. Introduction

Many people read the Bible but nothing seems to happen. Why isn’t the Bible working for them?

A. The Bible Has Power

  1. We’ve established this in previous messages
  2. It has the power to save, sanctify, and transform
  3. History proves its effectiveness

B. But Many People See No Results

  1. They read but nothing changes
  2. They hear but don’t grow
  3. They own Bibles that gather dust

II. The Problem Identified (Hebrews 4:2)

“For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.”

A. The Word Was Preached

  1. They heard it clearly
  2. They understood it intellectually
  3. The message was delivered

B. But It Did Not Profit Them

  1. No transformation
  2. No salvation
  3. No growth

C. Why? - Not Mixed with Faith

  1. Faith is the key ingredient
  2. Hearing without believing is useless
  3. The Word must be received by faith

III. Common Reasons the Bible “Doesn’t Work”

A. Hard Hearts

  1. Hearts hardened by sin
  2. Hearts hardened by rejection
  3. Hearts hardened by disappointment

B. Distracted Minds

  1. Worried about other things
  2. Entertainment-addicted
  3. Too busy to focus

C. Selective Hearing

  1. Only hearing what we want
  2. Ignoring what convicts
  3. Picking and choosing

D. Lack of Obedience

  1. James 1:22 - Hearers only, not doers
  2. Knowledge without action
  3. Light rejected brings darkness

IV. How to Make the Bible Work

A. Come with a Soft Heart

  1. Ask God to prepare your heart
  2. Remove known sin
  3. Be humble and teachable

B. Come with Faith

  1. Believe what you read
  2. Trust God to speak
  3. Expect transformation

C. Come Ready to Obey

  1. Determine to do what it says
  2. Act on what you learn
  3. Follow through

Conclusion

The Bible works when we let it work. The problem is never with the Book - it’s with us. Come with faith, come with a soft heart, and come ready to obey.
