I. Introduction
A. The Importance of Workers
- Every great work of God requires workers
- The walls of Jerusalem weren’t built by angels - they were built by ordinary people
- Nehemiah chapter 3 gives us a detailed record of who did what
B. Why This Matters
- God records the names of faithful workers
- Your service matters to God
- We can learn from their example
II. Message - Wall to Wall Workers
A. The Variety of Workers
In Nehemiah 3, we see all kinds of people working together:
- Priests (v.1) - Religious leaders got their hands dirty
- Rulers (v.9, 12, 14-19) - Leaders led by example
- Merchants (v.8, 32) - Business people contributed
- Goldsmiths (v.8, 31-32) - Craftsmen used their skills
- Perfumers (v.8) - Even those with delicate trades worked
- Women (v.12) - Daughters worked alongside fathers
- Common people (throughout) - Regular folks did their part
B. The Character of the Workers
1. They Were Willing
- No one was forced to work
- They volunteered their time and effort
- Their hearts were in the work
2. They Were Focused
- Each knew their assignment
- They didn’t try to do everything
- They completed their section
3. They Were Faithful
- They didn’t quit when it got hard
- They kept working despite opposition
- They finished what they started
4. They Were Together
- They worked side by side
- Each section connected to the next
- Unity in purpose
C. The Exceptions
-
The nobles of Tekoa (v.5) - “put not their necks to the work of their Lord”
- Some thought they were too important
- Too proud to do manual labour
- Their names are recorded for their shame
-
But the people of Tekoa (v.27) - worked on a second section!
- Even though their leaders wouldn’t help
- They did double duty
- Their faithfulness covered the gap
III. Lessons for Today
A. Everyone Has a Place in God’s Work
- No one is too important to serve
- No one is too unimportant to matter
- God uses all kinds of people
B. Find Your Section
- What has God placed nearest to you?
- What skills has God given you?
- Where can you make a difference?
C. Work Where You Are
- Don’t wait for a better assignment
- Be faithful in the small things
- Let God expand your territory
D. Don’t Let Others’ Failure Stop You
- Some won’t do their part
- You keep working anyway
- Your faithfulness may cover their gap
IV. Application
- Are you a worker or a watcher?
- What section of wall has God assigned to you?
- Are you faithful in that assignment?
- Are you willing to do double duty if needed?
- Is your name being recorded for faithfulness or for shame?
God is looking for wall-to-wall workers - people who will faithfully serve wherever they are placed, working together to rebuild what has been broken.
