“Behold,
the days come, saith the Lord GOD,
that
I will send a famine in the land,
not
a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but
of hearing the words of the LORD” (Amos 8:11)
It has now been over 150 years since the “Great” Irish
famine of 1845-49! That famine truly was “great” in the sense of suffering.
Over a million people died during those long five years, and those who did not
meet death, wished either to join the million that had fled to other countries,
or those already in the grave. The whole country was devastated simply because
of a single fungus blighting the principle food source - the potato. When it was
all over, Ireland was left with less than half of the population that had once
walked, and worked, and loved this grand isle.
Interestingly enough, history acknowledges that during the
first years of that famine, the starving people were surrounded by the very food
that would have saved them! There were literally loads of crops sitting on
docks, in train depots, and on farmlands. In all previous Irish famines, food
was always prohibited from being exported so that the people would have priority
access to the food. But this time, the Irish were forbidden to touch any of the
exports. The government thought it was better to import
the food for the starving. We well know the effect of their decision.
Different Famines
Not all famines deal with the lack of bread and water. It
was the Lord Jesus Christ who emphasized this fact. He said, far more important
than food in a person’s belly, is whether they have the words of the Eternal
God in their soul. “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by
every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)! An aching,
and empty heart is just as real and devastating as an aching, empty stomach! And
the answer to every person’s emptiness rests in a Book that declares the
remedy - which is Jesus Christ alone! This Book does not reside in some museum
somewhere inaccessible, but is available in its entirety, for as little as a £1!
People today are starving spiritually simply because they have been deceived
into thinking that their hunger would be better satisfied elsewhere!
The Worst of All
Famines
The real famine
that Ireland is experiencing today is the lack of God’s word! Spiritual
nourishment is not found in rituals, or prayers, psychiatrists, or in education
- but in God’s holy word. And don’t think that this famine is not here! Just
ask yourself, “Where are the words of God today?” People by and large are
not yearning to know more about Jesus, about the Holy Spirit, Salvation,
forgiveness of sin, and heaven - all because the Bible has been replaced! People
want to talk about the latest movies, new CDs, sports team performance,
financial news, book reviews, but NOT the Bible! It just is not part of daily
life! People’s interest in God is only limited to 30-45 minutes once a week
(if even that much)!
Our Purpose
The purpose of the articles in this website is to direct
the spiritually starved back to the bread Scriptures! These articles are not
intended to just inform you ABOUT the Bible, but rather to present the reader
with the wonders of its existence, and to stir-up a yearning to know its Author,
and its contents. Too many books have been written ABOUT the Bible, and have
actually taken the place of the Bible for all practical purposes! That is not
our goal.
You see, if heaven is real (and it is); and if Jesus Christ
died for our sins (and He did); and if salvation is free (and it is); and if
Jesus is coming again to this earth (and He is); then we would never know these
things for sure without a written document that has stood the test of time and
described these truths for all people. It is the Bible that is God’s
revelation, revealing Himself to sinful man who could not know God on their own!
Only the Bible is God’s lifeline to heaven - the medium through which He has
told us all that we need to know about Him. When you take away the Bible, or
allow someone else to take it away, you hang yourself! True faith does not come
from reading missiles, prayer-books, devotions, and other religious books. It
comes from reading God’s word for yourself (Romans 10:17) - for only in it are
the words of eternal life!
