Verse 1

A long time ago in Canaan land, lived a man like you and me.

He was born with a heart that sought its own –
and with God he would disagree.

Stole, the birthright from his brother, and the blessing that was not his own –

So he ran from his problems and the hurt he caused,

avoiding all the seeds he’d sown…

Chorus

Jacob had to learn his heart was so wicked - deceitful above all things;

It’s not a very easy truth to learn, it’s a lesson only trials can bring.

A man must lose the grip on the life he holds, so tightly with both his hands,

And finally take hold on the Lord above, and humbly trust in all His plans!

Verse 2

As Jacob walked a-long his way, God promised to go with him;

But lands and girls and worldly things, were all that attracted him.

So he got his wealth and Rachel too, but it came at-such a cost!

For sin always deceives a man, and only leaves him at a loss…

To Chorus

Verse 3

Where once he sought to get his way, and success naturally;

It now was hard to get ahead, and from reaping he would have to flee!

But then he had, to face his brother, and boy, was he still mad!

But alone one night he fought with God, and finally his heart was glad!!!

Verse 4

Then came the morning, Is-rael, hobbled slowly out of his tent,

And faced his brother with a brand new heart, and E-sau was content!

Jacob found that life was sweeter, when he did all things God’s way,

And he shows this world by losing things, in the end, a believer will gain!

Last Chorus

Jacob finally learned his heart was so wicked – now we must learn this lesson too.

It’s not a very easy truth to learn, but your trials are teaching you.

Every man must lose the grip on the life he holds, so tightly with both his hands

And finally take hold on the Lord above, and humbly trust in all His plans!
