The Way to Escape!

Lesson 4

Key Word: Obey

Main  Memory Verse:

Genesis 7:5 “And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him.”

Lesson Verses:

Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.”

John 10:9  “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved”

Lesson Goal: To present the only way of escape from the coming wrath of God.

This is the main lesson on salvation.

I.       Introduction – Last week, we learned from the Bible, that…

A.    The World in Noah’s Day was in Trouble

B.     God told Noah to warn the World about its sins!

C.     But the WARNINGS WERE REFUSED!

D.    We learned also that OUR world today is in trouble with God – there is so much disobedience – so much sin, AND people don’t care!

II.    Background

A.    Well, things now get interesting

B.     Up until this point, Noah and his family have just been a little weird

C.     They get up and read their Bible, the pray as a family, they go to church every week, they love God and worship Him, and they obey God!

D.    But now, Noah is doing something in a field near hear house.

1.      He has started to buy some tools – some big tools.

2.      And he has started cutting down some trees – some BIG trees

3.      And he is laying all the cut wooden beams out in a very long line – he seems to be making something very big… Anybody know what Noah is building?

4.      That’s right! An Ark! A very big BOAT! But a boat unlike any other boat ever built!

E.     Why did Noah Build the Ark?

1.      First of all because God told him to

a.       It may have looked crazy building a big boat out in the middle of a field, but GOD knew what He was doing

b.      In 100 years, that empty field where the Ark was sitting, was going to be covered in what? WATER! And lots of water too! A FLOOD!

2.      So, Noah set out to build that BOAT because God commanded him to build it! We are supposed to obey God and do what HE says right?

3.      And, Noah built it because he wanted his family to be safe!

a.       Wouldn’t you want your family saved from a flood?

b.      I would! And I would do whatever God said to be saved!

F.      Why did he build the Ark so BIG?

1.      This was not a small house boat, but a HUGE ship

2.      God was the Designer of the Ark – God told Noah how to build it, how long, how high, how many floors

3.      Because God wanted there to be plenty of room

G.    There were some strange things about this boat Noah was building

1.      It was made of gopher wood – a very rare, very hard wood, like Oak wood. It was the most expensive wood. Only this kind of wood would survive the flood

2.      It took 100 years to build this Ark! It was not easy!

a.       Noah was 500 years old when he started to build the ark

1)      People lived a long, long time back then

2)      But Noah should have been retiring at that age – playing golf, and going on holidays

3)      But instead he was out there, six days a week, building a big, massive, gargantuan BOAT

b.      Noah was 600 years old when the ark was finished!

3.      Why did it take Noah so long to build the Ark? Because it was BIG!

a.       300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high – cubit is a little less than half a metre

b.      That means it was 140 metres long (450'), 23 metres wide (75') and 14 metres high (45 ')

c.       It had 3 levels – like a 3 story hotel

d.      The ark was sealed with pitch tar so that water wouldn’t leak in – that’s good!

e.       The word Ark simply means “Box.” It did not look like a normal boat. It didn’t have any sails, or masts. It didn’t even have a rudder. It was just a big, long BOX that was only intended to FLOAT!

4.      There was PLENTY of room for all the animals that were coming on board…

a.       God was bringing 2 of every kind of animal. The animals came to the ark which was supernatural

b.      Enough room for 35,000 – 50,000 animals

c.       It would hold 522 railroad freight cars of animals and food

d.      Most animals are smaller than the common house cat

e.       There were Giraffes, Elephants, mice, ants, caterpillars, worms, AND dinosaurs on the ark!

f.       There were monkeys and cows, and dogs and cats, and rabbits and bears and snakes too!

g.      AND, there were deer and buffalo and black birds and pidgins and doves

5.      But wait a minute… How Could Noah Round Up So Many Animals?

a.       The Bible says, “Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.” (Genesis 6:20)

b.      This verse tells us that Noah didn’t have to search or travel to far away places to bring the animals on board the Ark. The world was completely different before the Flood, and there probably was only one continent. The animals simply arrived at the Ark as if called by a “homing instinct” (a behaviour implanted in the animals by their Creator) and marched up the ramp, all by themselves! Cool!

6.      But wait a minute. This boat was being built, not in the water, but out in the middle of an empty barley field! Strange, wouldn’t you say?

H.    How did everything get into the Ark? One Big Door!

1.      Only ONE Door

2.      No back door or side doors, or sliding patio doors

3.      Just one main door to get in!

4.      All the animals came in that door, and Noah invited everyone to come into the Ark through that Door!

I.       Do you know the saddest part about Noah building the Ark?

1.      Only 8 people got on the ark – only Noah, Mrs. Noah, Noah’s three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and their three wives! That’s only EIGHT people!

III.             Application - The Truths About the Ark

A.    The ark is showing us all, SALVATION from the judgment of God

B.     God’s grace and mercy provide a way to be saved

C.     The ark had one door - Jesus said He is the Door, one to be saved

1.      Interesting facts About Jesus

a.       Jesus is like the Ark in the following ways

b.      Jesus is the only doorway to God and to salvation from God’s coming judgement

c.       Jesus provides perfect security for believers (Rom 8:31)

d.      Jesus is very rare – only HE could save the world

e.       God sealed us with His Holy Spirit

2.      John 14:6  “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

3.      Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.”

4.      John 10:9  “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved”

5.      Ephesians 2:8,9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

D.    So, how was Noah and his family saved from the wrath to come?

1.      NOAH WAS SAVED BY REPENTANCE

2.      NOAH WAS SAVED BY FAITH – A decision to obey God

a.       Noah had never seen a flood.

b.      Noah had never seen rain.

c.       Noah had never even seen every animal in the world.

d.      Noah had never seen a boat like the one God told him to build.

e.       But God spoke directly to Noah and he trusted in the word of God.

f.       Hebrews 11:7 "By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith."

3.      NOAH WAS SAVED BY OBEDIENCE

a.       What good is faith if we aren’t going to obey God when he tells us what we have to do to be saved?!

b.      Noah's obedience.

1)      Genesis 6:22 "Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he."

2)      Genesis 7:5, 7:9, 7:16 says the same thing. That Noah did what God commanded.

3)      But Noah did what God commanded for the purpose that God commanded it--to be saved.

4)      This is obedience.

4.      NOAH AND HIS WHOLE FAMILY WERE SAVED FROM A TERRIBLE DEATH

a.       Noah's salvation from death – Romans 6:23a “the wages of sin is DEATH!”

b.      He wasn’t just being religious, Noah was believing and trusting, and obeying so he could be saved from the wrath to come!

c.       Genesis 7:21-23 "And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark."

E.     IT IS THE SAME WITH US TODAY!

1.      Our faith.

a.       We have never seen heaven or hell.

b.      We have never seen God, or Jesus, or Satan.

c.       But just as Noah trusted in the word of God, so we do.

d.      God speaks to us today through His word, the Bible

e.       So we put our trust in what the Bible says to do!

f.       Today we are saved by faith. Just like NOAH!

g.      Do any of you believe that God wants to save people from hell? I do! God tells us over and over in the Bible that He loves us, and wants us to be with Him in heaven!

h.      People need to believe it when God says judgment is coming AGAIN!

i.        And people need to get saved from their sins that are getting them in trouble with God!

2.      Our obedience. We have to obey God!

a.       1 John 5:3, 4 "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith."

b.      Hebrews 5:8, 9 "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;"

c.       We are saved by obedience today. Just as Noah obeyed for the reasons that God told him to obey, so must we.

3.      Everyone needs to be saved from the destruction that is ahead!

IV.             CONCLUSION:

A.    This world IS going to be judged – soon! (1Pet 4:17)

1.      It was judged in Noah’s Day

2.      It was judged in Sodom and Gomorrah

3.      Egypt was severely judged by God

B.     You had better be saved (Heb 2:3) – if you are not born again, you can be today!

C.     Invitation

1.      God's plan for your salvation is the same as Noah. For Noah it was getting into a BOAT

2.      But God has a BETTER ARK for us to get into. OUR Saviour is JESUS!

3.      Repent of your sins (Acts 17:30). Tell God you admit you are a sinner and are sorry for all your sins

4.      Believe that Jesus is the Son of God, who came to die in your and my place o the cross

5.      And ask Him to come into your heart and wash away all your sins, and make you His child!

D.    You had better get your whole family ready – it was serious enough in Noah’s day – it is even more serious now – because we are talking about OUR families. Don’t ever give up!

E.     And finally, get your friends ready to miss the coming judgment of God
